It is an inland borough of about eight square miles, surrounded by Dennis and Upper Townships, founded in 1891 when the Baron de Hirsch Fund bought 5,300 acres of forest and cleared it for farms settled by Jewish immigrants from Russia. The Woodbine Brotherhood Synagogue on Washington Avenue, on the National Register, remains from that era.
